Welcome to A Touch of Comfort by Iris

Helping families keep their people safe, independent, and home

We started this agency after watching too many families face an impossible choice: uproot a parent into an unfamiliar facility, or watch them struggle alone in a home that was becoming unsafe. There is a third option, and it is the one we have built our practice around.

A Touch of Comfort by Iris provides licensed, nurse-supervised care throughout Wakefield and Greater Boston — from a few companionship hours a week to daily personal care and clinical support after a hospital stay. Every plan begins with a free in-home conversation and is written around the person, not a service menu. Our caregivers are employees we have screened, trained, and matched by temperament, and they return visit after visit so trust has room to grow. Families receive visit notes, scheduled check-in calls, and a coordinator who picks up the phone at two in the morning. The goal is simple and stubborn: a life that still feels like your own, lived in the home you have always known.

Our approach

Four commitments that shape every visit

Home care is intimate work. These principles keep it honest when the schedule gets hard.

Dignity First

Care should never cost someone their sense of self. Our caregivers ask before they act, explain before they assist, and preserve privacy during the most personal moments of the day. Clients choose what they wear, when they eat, and how their home is arranged — we adapt to the person rather than asking the person to adapt to us.

Family-Centered Planning

Families know things no assessment form can capture. We build every plan in the living room with the people who love the client, capturing the small details — the favorite mug, the afternoon radio program, the medication that upsets their stomach — and then keep you looped in with visit summaries and scheduled check-in calls.

Skilled & Compassionate Caregivers

Warmth alone is not enough and clinical skill alone is cold. Our caregivers are trained in safe transfers, fall prevention, dementia communication, and nutrition, then supervised by a registered nurse. We hire for empathy, train for competence, and never send anyone into a home who hasn't been briefed on that client's specific needs.

Flexible Scheduling

Need changes rarely announce themselves politely. Whether it's four hours twice a week, overnight coverage after a hospital discharge, or a sudden weekend of respite, we adjust the schedule without contracts or penalties. Care can scale up during recovery and scale back down as independence returns.

Core services

Daily support, handled with skill and warmth

Nine services, delivered by the same familiar caregivers and coordinated under one nurse-written plan.

Personal Care

Personal Care

Hands-on support with the routines that become difficult first: bathing and showering with safety equipment, grooming, oral care, dressing, toileting and incontinence support, skin checks, and safe transfers between bed, chair, and bathroom. Caregivers are trained in fall-prevention technique and body mechanics, so assistance never feels rushed or unsteady. Every task is delivered with privacy in mind — doors closed, towels ready, conversation warm — because personal care handled well is the difference between feeling helped and feeling handled.

Companion Care

Companion Care

Loneliness is a genuine health risk, and companionship is genuine care. Our caregivers share meals, play cards and crosswords, walk the neighborhood, sort photographs, write letters, watch the game, and simply sit and listen. They also keep quiet watch on the things that matter — appetite, mood, energy, confusion — and flag changes early. For clients who live alone, these visits become the anchor of the week and the reason a family two states away can breathe easier.

Elderly Care

Elderly Care

Comprehensive support for aging in place, built around mobility, memory, and safety. We assist with walkers and canes, encourage prescribed exercises, remove trip hazards, improve lighting, and structure the day to reduce confusion for clients living with dementia. Care includes gentle orientation, redirection instead of correction, and consistent routines that make the world feel predictable again. As needs deepen, the plan deepens with them — without an unwanted move to a facility.

Medication Reminders

Medication Reminders

Missed and doubled doses are one of the most common causes of avoidable hospital visits. We organize weekly pill planners, prompt each dose at the right time with the right food or water, observe for side effects, track refills, and coordinate directly with pharmacies so nothing runs out on a Sunday. Every prompt is documented, so families and physicians can see adherence at a glance rather than guessing from an empty bottle.

Everyday living support

The practical work that keeps a household running

Meals, tidiness, errands, rest, and clinical oversight — the quieter services that decide whether staying home actually works.

Meal Preparation

Meal Preparation

Nutrition quietly determines energy, healing, and mood. Caregivers plan menus around medical requirements — low sodium, diabetic-friendly, renal, soft or pureed textures — then shop, cook, and portion meals the client actually looks forward to eating. Family recipes are welcome and often the point. We sit down and eat alongside clients whenever possible, because appetite improves in company, and we log fluid and food intake so dehydration never sneaks up unnoticed.

Light Housekeeping

Light Housekeeping

A safe, clean home is preventative medicine. We handle dishes, laundry, bed linens, bathroom and kitchen sanitizing, vacuuming, taking out the trash, watering plants, and keeping walkways clear of cords and clutter. Nothing is moved or discarded without asking — the client's system stays the client's system. The result is a home that feels cared for rather than rearranged, and one that dramatically lowers the odds of a fall.

Transportation

Transportation

Losing the car keys should not mean losing the life you built. Caregivers drive clients to physician appointments, dialysis, physical therapy, the pharmacy, the grocery store, worship services, and family gatherings — then stay to help, take notes at the appointment, carry the bags, and get everything safely inside. Drivers are insured, their records are verified annually, and mileage is billed transparently.

Respite Care

Respite Care

Family caregivers burn out quietly and then all at once. Respite coverage gives you a scheduled afternoon, a full weekend, or a week away, knowing a trained caregiver is following your exact routine. We learn the household rhythm first — the nap window, the favorite chair, the way she likes her tea — so your return isn't spent undoing chaos. Rest is not a luxury in this work; it is what makes the long road survivable.

Nursing Support

Nursing Support

For clients with clinical needs, licensed nurses oversee the care plan: vital sign monitoring, wound and ostomy care, diabetic and blood pressure management, post-surgical recovery protocols, and coordination with physicians and discharge planners. Nurses conduct the initial assessment, supervise caregivers, and revise the plan when health status shifts, providing a clinical safety net around the daily human support.

Who we care for

Different situations, the same steady presence

01

Seniors aging in place

The client who has lived in the same house for forty years and intends to stay. We shore up the gaps — bathing, meals, driving, housekeeping — so that independence is supported rather than surrendered, and the family stops negotiating about a move nobody wants.

02

Post-surgery & post-hospital recovery

The first three weeks after discharge decide whether recovery holds or a readmission follows. We cover medication schedules, wound checks, mobility restrictions, follow-up transportation, and nutrition, working straight from the discharge instructions rather than from memory.

03

Living with chronic conditions

Parkinson's, stroke recovery, COPD, diabetes, arthritis, early and mid-stage dementia. Care is condition-specific and steady: exercise routines carried out daily, symptoms tracked, triggers avoided, and small changes escalated before they become emergencies.

04

Family caregivers needing respite

The daughter running two households, the husband who hasn't slept through the night in a year. We step in on a schedule you set, follow your routine to the letter, and hand the day back the way you left it — so you can be family again instead of staff.

How it works

From first phone call to steady, familiar care

Four steps, usually completed within 24 to 72 hours.

01

Free Consultation

We visit your home at no cost, meet everyone involved, and listen far more than we talk. We walk the house looking at stairs, lighting, and bathrooms; review medications and diagnoses; and ask about the routines and preferences that make your loved one who they are. You leave the conversation with honest guidance on the level of care needed, even if that turns out to be less than you expected.

02

Personalized Care Plan

A nurse builds a written plan covering tasks, timing, dietary needs, mobility precautions, emergency contacts, and personal preferences down to how the coffee is made. You approve it before a single shift is scheduled, and you receive a plain-language copy along with a transparent hourly rate — no assessment fees, no hidden add-ons, no long-term contract.

03

Caregiver Match & Introduction

We match on more than availability: temperament, pace, language, interests, and experience with the specific condition. Before care begins, the caregiver and a coordinator visit together for an introduction so the first working day involves a familiar face. If the chemistry isn't right, we re-match promptly and without awkwardness — that's on us, not on you.

04

Ongoing Care & Check-Ins

Every visit is documented and shared. A nurse supervisor reviews notes weekly, performs in-home quality visits during the first month and quarterly after, and calls the family on a set cadence. Plans are formally revisited every ninety days, or immediately after any hospitalization or change in condition, so the care always matches the reality.

Meet the care team

Vetted carefully. Trained continuously. Supervised always.

Fewer than one in five applicants reaches our client-facing roster. The ones who do are the people we would send to our own parents.

Screening includes multi-state criminal background checks, CORI review, license verification with the issuing body, driving record checks, and reference calls with prior supervisors. Onboarding covers safe transfer technique, fall prevention, infection control, dementia communication, nutrition, and emergency response, with annual continuing education and condition-specific coaching. Every caregiver is a W-2 employee — insured, bonded, and supervised by a registered nurse who reviews the care record weekly.

What Greater Boston families tell us

“My mother resisted help for two years. The caregiver Iris matched her with won her over in a single afternoon — they now garden together on Tuesdays. Mom is eating properly again and I finally sleep through the night.”
Marianne D.Daughter of client, Wakefield
“After my hip replacement we needed help fast. A nurse assessed us on a Saturday and care started Monday morning. Every visit is logged and I get a text summary the same evening — that transparency means everything.”
Robert & Elaine P.Clients, Melrose
“What sets them apart is consistency. We see the same two caregivers, not a rotating cast of strangers. My father-in-law knows their voices before he sees their faces.”
Priya S.Son's wife / family coordinator, Reading
“Respite care gave me my marriage back. Three afternoons a week I can be a husband instead of only a caregiver, and I come home to a calm house and a happy wife.”
Thomas H.Husband of client, Stoneham
“Dad's medication schedule was a nightmare of nine prescriptions. Their reminder routine and pharmacy coordination ended the confusion in the first week. No missed doses since.”
Angela R.Daughter of client, Boston
“Billing is plain English, hour by hour. No contracts, no surprise fees, no pressure to add services my aunt didn't need. Rare and deeply appreciated.”

Rooted in Wakefield, serving Greater Boston

Our coordinators live in the communities we cover, which is why a caregiver can usually be at the door the same day an urgent need appears.

Standard scheduling requests are staffed within 24 to 72 hours, and urgent hospital discharges are frequently covered the next morning. Because our caregivers are assigned by neighborhood rather than dispatched across the region, travel delays are rare and shift coverage stays consistent even in New England weather.

Questions families ask

Straight answers, before you commit to anything

More detail lives on our FAQ page — or call and ask a person.

Is it time for home care?

Seven signs a loved one may need support at home

Most families wait longer than they mean to. If two or more of these sound familiar, a free consultation can help you understand your options — with no obligation.

Unsteady on their feet

Near-falls on the stairs, holding furniture to walk, or a new fear of the shower are early warnings that support with mobility and bathing would help.

Missed or doubled medications

Full pill organizers at week's end, confusion about doses, or prescriptions piling up at the pharmacy put health at real risk.

A quieter, emptier fridge

Weight loss, expired food, or skipped meals often mean cooking has become too much — and nutrition is usually the first thing to slip.

The house is slipping

Unopened mail, laundry piling up, or a home that was always tidy slowly becoming cluttered signals that daily tasks are overwhelming.

Withdrawal from things they loved

Skipped church services, abandoned hobbies, or stopped phone calls can point to loneliness or early memory changes worth addressing gently.

You are running on empty

If you are missing work, losing sleep, or feeling guilty no matter what you do, that is a sign too — family caregivers need and deserve backup.

Recognize your family in this list? A short conversation costs nothing and often brings real relief.

Cost & payment options

What does home care cost in Greater Boston?

Home care is usually more affordable than assisted living — and far more flexible. You pay only for the hours you need, with one clear hourly rate quoted in writing before care begins.

There are no assessment fees, no deposits, and no long-term contracts. Schedules can start at just a few hours a week and scale up or down as needs change, so families stay in control of the budget. During your free consultation we will give you an exact written quote for your situation — most families are surprised how manageable it is.

Private pay

The most common option. One transparent hourly rate, itemized weekly invoices, and the freedom to adjust hours anytime.

Long-term care insurance

Many policies cover in-home care. We help you review your policy, handle the paperwork, and bill the insurer directly where possible.

Veterans benefits

Veterans and surviving spouses may qualify for VA Aid & Attendance benefits that offset home care costs. We can point you to the right resources.

Flexible starter schedules

Not ready for daily care? Begin with a few companion or housekeeping hours a week and grow the plan only when it makes sense.

Book an appointment

Let's build a care plan your family can trust

Tell us a little about your situation and a care coordinator will call you back within one business hour. Consultations are free, in your home, and carry no obligation.
